A Photo a Day from the 2025 Regent World Cruise--Rio to Valparaiso
As I continue to sort my photos, deleting, processing, tagging, and filing for several hours each evening, I’m forever grateful that I had the opportunity to visit so many incredible places.
And I do hope I finish before my next sojourn. I arrived home with over 40 K photo files on my computer, and I’ve deleted 25%, though there are photos from some ports of call that I‘ve barely looked at. I’ve discovered, happily, that by going through the images slowly, I’m reliving many of the highlights of our travels, as well as lots of the quieter, under-the-radar moments.
Segment Two: Beauty at the End of the World
Here’s the next segment, as we cruised from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Valparaiso, Chile, by way of Antarctica and the Chilean fjords.
Jan 25 Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Overnight to 6:00 PM. The “Escape & Delight in Brazil” cruisers disembarked on our second day in Rio, and many new cruisers boarded for Segment Two, “Beauty at the End of the World.” Since there are around 280 world cruisers, about half of the ship’s passengers are cruising on one or more segments.
Jan 26 Santos, Brazil 9:00 AM 6:00 PM.
Jan 27 Itajai, Brazil (Blumenau) 8:00 AM 4:00 PM.
Jan 28 Cruising The Atlantic Ocean. You think it’s all fun and games aboard the ship? Nope. Day-to-day activities also fill our days, such as pulling out the suitcase from under the bed that holds five months’ worth of prescription medications and toiletries for our every-two-week refills.
Jan 29, Montevideo, Uruguay 10:00 AM 8:00 PM. Small museums are among our favorite destinations. We wandered the streets of Montevideo on our own, stopping in galleries and boutiques, and then visited two local museums, including the Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art Museum, which had a huge exhibit of Indigenous Tribal masks.
Jan 30 Buenos Aires, Argentina 8:00 AM 6:00 PM.
Jan 31 Punta Del Este, Uruguay 7:00 AM 7:00 PM.
Feb 01 Cruising The Atlantic Ocean.
Feb 02 Cruising The Atlantic Ocean.
Feb 03 Stanley, Falkland Islands 8:00 AM 6:00 PM. Unable to anchor due to strong winds, this long-lens photo was as close as we got to “seeing” the Falklands.
Feb 04, Cruising the Atlantic Ocean (Elephant Island). This was our “substitute” visit. Unable to secure anchorage in the Falklands, Captain Abhi received permission for a sail-by of Elephant Island, the island of sailing myth and lore.
Feb 05 Half Moon Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica).
Feb 06 Paradise Bay (Antarctic Mainland Peninsula).
Feb 07 Gerlache Bay (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica).
Feb 08 Cruising Drake Passage. (Due to a medical emergency, we hurriedly crossed the Drake “Lake” and arrived in Ushuaia around 11 PM. Eight hours ahead of schedule.)
Feb 09 Ushuaia, Argentina 7:00 AM 5:00 PM.
Feb 10 Punta Arenas, Chile 11:00 AM 8:00 PM.
Feb 11 Cruising The Chilean Fjords, Amalia Glacier.
Feb 12 Cruising The Chilean Fjords, Tempano Glacier.
Feb 13 Puerto Chacabuco, Chile 7:00 AM 4:00 PM.
Feb 14 Puerto Montt, Chile 10:00 AM 6:00 PM. (We didn’t explore Puerto Montt as expected. After a dental appointment, we explored a local grocery store instead.)
Feb 15 Cruising The Pacific Ocean.
Feb 16 Santiago (Valparaiso), Chile 7:00 AM 8:00 PM.
The first passengers to disembark were those departing the cruise in Valparaiso, followed by most of the World Cruisers, who attended an all-day World Cruise event at a nearby winery for food, wine, and entertainment. When we returned to the ship around 5 PM, most of the newest segment cruisers were already on board and getting acclimated—a smooth operation.
This was a popular segment, as we were scheduled to visit the Falkland Islands, Antarctica, and the Chilean Fjords—all “bucket-list” destinations. Even though we had to scratch the Falklands, we had great visits to the icy continent and the fjords. We would have loved to see the sun a little more in Antarctica and the fjords, but we still had many memorable moments.
And that is the end of “Beauty at the End of the World”.
Next post—Segment Three, Isles of Wonder, cruising from Valparaiso, Chile to Papeete (Tahiti), French Polynesia.
Fascinating part of the world!
